Last year, our lovely tutor, Erin, undertook a dyslexia course so that she could add even more tools to her belt for helping her students :) This award was a practical programme focusing on understanding and supporting learners with dyslexia and/or specific learning difficulties and Erin found it to be both insightful and useful; she is already implementing lots of the techniques learnt here at INICIO.

What is dyslexia?

Dyslexia is a learning difficulty which impacts how some students are able to learn. Most commonly, it affects reading and spelling skills, as well as sequencing, planning and organisation. Each person with dyslexia will face different challenges, so we believe that every approach should be tailored to the individual, so that every child benefits as much as possible.

What did the course involve?

Erin covered a variety of aspects whilst studying for her award, including understanding the barriers to literacy; legislation, policies and procedures surrounding dyslexia and how they are implemented into education (specifically in the teaching environment here at INICIO); identifying anything that may be a sign of a student being dyslexic and the different methods to help students with dyslexia.

She had several assessments to complete and some of the students at INICIO even took part in the spelling activities that Erin focused on for her intervention.

What does this mean for your child at INICIO?

For those with a diagnosis of dyslexia or with special educational needs, Erin will be able to guide your child to ensure that they receive the level of support that they need for their learning. Suggesting different methods and ways to learn, so that they can find the right one for them, is of paramount importance and, as with all of our students, she tailors the resources to enable the student to work in a way that suits them.

Erin can also identify any possible signs that a child may have dyslexia and help to inform you and your child of the next steps, so that you can access the help available and, if necessary, arrange a dyslexia diagnosis assessment. Although we don’t offer these in-house, we have some recommendations!

We are here to help in any way that we can, so just get in touch!
