From a young age, there is always the question of what you want to do when you grow up. Well, now that you're older and getting to the stage that you need to think about the next steps, what do you want to be?
Think of the person that you envisioned yourself being when you were younger. Was it a surgeon? An astronaut? A dancer? A policeman? Or perhaps an interior designer? Now that you’re coming close to experiencing what ‘the real world’ is like, it may seem harder than expected to achieve these dreams. You might think that it is a long process to get there but it takes a lot for a person to become successful in their life… you just need to be determined!
Is it really possible?
It may sound cliché, but achieving your dreams is possible; you can be the person that you have always seen yourself becoming, you just need to be prepared to work hard and make your ambitions clear. You can start by making a career plan; researching the pathways to get there, what support you may need and the topics that you need to brush up on to succeed.
Do it for you! It’s so important to be happy in life and making the right career choice can help you to achieve that. If you know, for example, that being a teacher is what you love, makes you happy and that it doesn’t feel like ‘a job’, then you know that it's for you.
At school, you may have a careers adviser and we would defiantly suggest going to have a chat with them, as they can help you to figure out exactly which path to take. For example, you may need to study a specific degree at university to go on to your chosen career; if university isn’t an option for you, or isn’t what you want to do, you may be able to gain experience in your chosen field and start to work your way up to the position that you’re hoping for. This all depends on how much effort you put in and how dedicated you are.
The truth
Prepare yourself to be out of your comfort zone! On your journey to get to where you want to be, there may be times when you doubt yourself or feel a little down, as it can be hard and uncomfortable - this is where your passion plays a big part! Stay positive and believe that it can happen and will get better, because it will. There will be a lot to learn, so make sure that you stay alert and pick up the little things; the quicker you learn, the better you will be at your dream job.
Having the dream or ambition is only part of it, you've got to go out there, push yourself and believe that you are capable of amazing things :)
